Kenny Bednarek delivered the defining performance of his career at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, sweeping the men’s 100- and 200-meter titles in a three-day span.
The Rice Lake, Wisconsin native set a world-best mark for 2026 in the 200 meters on Sunday, Sept. 13, clocking 19.52 seconds. The time was a personal best, a full tenth of a second faster than his previous top mark this season, and ranks as the seventh-fastest 200 ever run. Among the athletes he beat was Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist in the event. Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the 200, had set his prior personal best of 19.57 in 2024.
His 100-meter victory on Friday, Sept. 11 carried more surprise. Bednarek crossed in 9.85 seconds, edging Jamaica’s Oblique Seville by five-hundredths of a second to claim his first-ever global title at the distance.
“Performance-wise and execution-wise, I give myself an A-plus right now,” Bednarek told NBC after the meet, crediting months of technical work that came together over the week.
The Ultimate Championships are a new biennial event from World Athletics that gathers top athletes without per-country entry limits. Winners earn $150,000 per event, putting Bednarek’s total payday at $300,000 for the double.
Notably absent from the track was Noah Lyles, who holds the 2026 world lead in the 100 at 9.79 seconds but sat out with a hamstring issue. Usain Bolt was among the observers in the stands at the National Athletics Centre.
The meet drew significant broadcast attention in the United States, with NBC providing coverage of the new championship format — a property of Comcast, whose shares traded at $25.20 on Monday, up 0.18% from the previous close of $25.16.
