NFL Opens 2026 Season with Weakest Kickoff Audience in Four Years
The NFL’s 2026 regular season got underway with softer television numbers than the league might have hoped. The opening game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots — a rematch of February’s Super Bowl LX — averaged 25.1 million viewers on NBC Sports, an 11% decline from the prior year’s Thursday-night season opener and the lowest kickoff-game audience since 2022.
Seattle edged New England 13–10 in the rare Wednesday slot, a scheduling choice the league has increasingly experimented with as international expansion and standalone broadcast windows reshape the calendar. The league will lean further into midweek football in November, when Netflix carries its first Thanksgiving Eve game between the Rams and Packers.
Measurement Changes in Play
The reported figure carries extra significance this year. It marks the first NFL viewership data NBC Sports has released using standard Nielsen methodologies, moving away from its own Total Audience Delivery metric that blended Nielsen data with other inputs. The shift follows pressure from Nielsen on networks making comparative claims using mixed measurement approaches, and the network contends that straight Nielsen figures should produce higher — and more accurate — audience counts. Nielsen also rolled out a set of methodology changes at the start of the new TV season, making it difficult to isolate how much of the year-over-year dip reflects measurement shifts versus underlying audience behavior.
There were bright spots within the numbers. Among viewers aged 18–49, the game delivered the largest season-opening audience since 2021, and the NFL has now strung together four straight kickoff games above 25 million average viewers, a streak last seen from 2013 to 2016. Last year’s opener, a Cowboys-Eagles matchup, was hampered by a 65-minute rain delay that undercut what had been tracking as a record audience.
Where the Audience Came From
Local markets with stakes in the game unsurprisingly led viewership: Providence and Boston ranked first and second, followed by Seattle-Tacoma. Buffalo — a perennial overperformer in sports ratings — placed fourth. The broadcast also featured the regular-season booth debut of Mike Tomlin, the former NFL head coach who drew generally positive reviews in his first game as an NBC Sports analyst.
NBC’s parent company, Comcast (CMCSA), trades at $24.97, down 0.78% on the day, with a market capitalization of roughly $92.5 billion. As the NFL season progresses, broadcast ratings remain a key driver of advertising revenue for the Media segment.
What to watch
- Upcoming NFL windows to gauge whether Wednesday audiences are a one-off or a pattern, including Netflix’s Thanksgiving Eve Rams-Packers game.
- Further clarity on how Nielsen’s season changes affect year-over-year ratings comparisons as more data accumulates.
- Comcast’s quarterly results, which will reflect NBC’s fall sports advertising performance.
