Seahawks QB Sam Darnold to miss time as team seeks four medical opinions on injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will sit out the team’s next game while the franchise consults four separate second opinions on a tendon injury in his glute, according to reporting from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer. FOX Sports is part of Fox Corporation, whose shares traded at $65.94 on Tuesday, up 1.17% from a prior close of $65.18, valuing the entertainment company at roughly $26.85 billion.

Darnold was injured on the opening drive of Seattle’s season-opening 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots and did not return. Initial medical evaluations raised the possibility of a fractured hip socket — an outcome that could have ended his season — before further testing identified the less severe tendon issue.

Despite the relief, the Seahawks have not established a return timetable. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Darnold is likely to miss a couple of games and characterized the muscular injury as not serious, with surgery not expected. The club is said to be taking a deliberately cautious approach as it awaits the results of the additional consultations.

Seattle showed in Week 1 that it can win without its starter. Backup Drew Lock stepped in against New England and completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. The 28-year-old carries a 10-18 record across 28 career starts, including a 1-4 stint with the New York Giants in 2024.

Behind Lock on the depth chart sits Jalen Milroe, a 23-year-old former third-round pick out of Alabama who would be next in line should the injury situation worsen.

The multiple-opinion approach reflects the stakes involved: Darnold is the established starter in Seattle, and the gap between a short absence and a longer layoff would shape the team’s offensive plans in the weeks ahead. For now, the organization is gathering information rather than committing to a treatment path.

What to watch

  • Results of the four medical consultations and any updated timeline from the Seahawks
  • Darnold’s practice participation status in the coming weeks
  • Lock’s performance during any extended absence, and whether Milroe sees game action
  • Official injury designations on Seattle’s weekly reports
