Cowherd Questions Payton–Nix Fit as Broncos Suffer lopsided Monday Night Defeat in Kansas City

The Denver Broncos left Arrowhead Stadium on Monday with plenty to answer for after a 31–10 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the postgame conversation quickly extended beyond the locker room. Among the loudest outside voices was Fox Sports 1 host Colin Cowherd, who suggested on X that head coach Sean Payton could soon grow frustrated with quarterback Bo Nix, offensive coordinator Davis Webb, or both, writing that the roster is “too good for this mess.”

The on-field numbers backed up the concern. Nix finished 17-of-28 for just 131 yards, throwing one touchdown against one interception while losing multiple fumbles and taking four sacks. Denver’s offense managed only 176 total yards — 61 of them on the ground — in Webb’s first game calling plays after his promotion from quarterbacks coach. Nix is also working back from an ankle injury, adding another layer of uncertainty to the unit.

Payton, a Super Bowl-winning coach, was blunt in his assessment. “Obviously, not a good evening,” he told reporters, per the Associated Press. Nix, 26, similarly admitted the team “didn’t play really well.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, by contrast, was barely touched. He threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns and added a 15-yard rushing score in the first quarter, and Payton specifically pointed to his team’s inability to generate sacks as a decisive factor. Kansas City’s new acquisition Kenneth Walker III also made a strong impression in his debut, rushing 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown.

Denver’s midweek trade for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, acquired from the Miami Dolphins, did little to change the outcome — he was targeted enough to record just one catch for two yards.

Cowherd’s commentary aired on FS1, part of Fox Corporation‘s sports portfolio. Fox shares closed at $68.53, up 3.93% from the previous close of $65.94, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $26.85 billion. The company operates in the Communication Services sector within the entertainment industry, spanning cable network programming and television, with sports content a core part of its distribution strategy. High-profile debates like Cowherd’s Payton–Nix analysis are a staple of that programming mix and a recurring driver of audience engagement around marquee NFL matchups.

The Broncos will have little time to regroup. With a short week ahead, Payton has outlined an adjusted preparation plan as Denver turns its attention to a Week 2 meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What to watch

  • Whether Nix (ankle) appears on Denver’s midweek injury report ahead of the Jaguars game.
  • Any changes to Webb’s play-calling role or offensive scheme after the 176-yard output.
  • How much usage Jaylen Waddle sees in his second game with the Broncos.
  • Fox Corporation’s next quarterly earnings report, which will cover advertising trends around its NFL programming.
