Falcons media advisory shift suggests Cooper Rush could start against Carolina

The Atlanta Falcons appear to be moving closer to naming Cooper Rush their starting quarterback for Sunday’s home opener against the Panthers, based on a subtle change to the team’s media schedule.

On Monday, the club said it had no updates on its quarterback situation. By Tuesday, however, the Falcons revised their Wednesday media advisory — replacing a generic “starting QB press conference” with one specifically identifying Rush, as first noted by Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

Steve Wyche of NFL Network reported that Rush was added to the press-conference lineup “based on no new information,” and that head coach Kevin Stefanski will reveal the starter whenever he chooses to make the decision public.

The quarterback competition has been unsettled since last week, when the Falcons initially announced Tua Tagovailoa as the starter. Tagovailoa’s status changed after he suffered an oblique injury during warmups ahead of Thursday’s practice.

The team would prefer to have Michael Penix Jr. available, but his recovery from knee surgery remains the central question. Stefanski told Jay Glazer of Fox Sports over the weekend that Penix needs to feel comfortable in the pocket with defenders near his surgically repaired knee before returning to game action.

Recovery timelines from ACL surgery vary widely among quarterbacks. Former passer Carson Palmer described his own lengthy adjustment period after a 2005 playoff injury, saying it took more than a full year — and several additional games the following season — before he stopped hesitating in the pocket when pressure appeared.

Penix has one mitigating factor: the surgically repaired leg is not his plant leg. Still, both legs are vulnerable when a pocket collapses, and he needs confidence that he can absorb contact from the side before taking the field.

Even without an official announcement, Wednesday’s practice should provide clarity. Which quarterback takes first-team reps will be difficult to conceal, and that will be the next meaningful signal about whether Rush, Penix, or another option starts Sunday.

Separately, coverage of the Falcons’ quarterback situation will land across multiple NFL broadcast partners. Fox Corporation, whose weekend NFL coverage included Glazer’s report on Penix, saw shares close at $67.74, down 1.68% from the prior close of $68.90, valuing the media company at roughly $26.8 billion.
