Iowa Edges Iowa State 16-13 on Late Buhr Field Goal in Clean Cy-Hawk Showdown

Iowa Edges Iowa State 16-13 on Late Buhr Field Goal in Clean Cy-Hawk Showdown

Caden Buhr drilled a 42-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining, lifting the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 16-13 victory over in-state rival Iowa State in the 73rd all-time meeting between the programs. The kick delivered Iowa’s narrowest Cy-Hawk win since an 18-17 result in Ames back in 2019, and it marked the program’s 10th victory since 2015 on a fourth-quarter field goal inside the final 30 seconds.

The final score offered an odd symmetry: it mirrored the 16-13 margin Iowa State earned a year ago in Ames on Kyle Konrardy’s game-winning kick. Konrardy had also connected on a winner in Iowa City in 2024, giving the Cyclones back-to-back wins in the series before Saturday’s flip. Iowa now leads the all-time series 47-25, and the last nine meetings have all been decided by 10 points or fewer.

A Rare Mistake-Free Rivalry Game

Notably, the game unfolded without a single sack or turnover by either side. That’s an anomaly in a series where ball security has often determined outcomes — Iowa has won 76 of 81 games since 2012 when claiming the turnover battle, while Iowa State had committed at least one turnover in every Cy-Hawk meeting dating back to 2006.

Penalties were a storyline for the Cyclones, who were flagged six times for 45 yards. First-year Iowa State head coach Jimmy Rogers pointed to the flags after suffering his first loss with the program. His previous Washington State squad averaged roughly seven penalties per game last season and ranked 84th nationally in penalty yardage per game.

Broadcast and Market Angle

The rivalry game aired nationally on NBC, part of the Comcast network family. Comcast’s media portfolio continues to feature prominent Big Ten coverage as college football remains a key draw for legacy broadcasters competing with streaming platforms. Shares of Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), classified in the Communication Services sector under Telecom Services, traded at $24.42 in recent action, down 1.77% from the prior close of $24.86, with a market capitalization near $92.5 billion.

What to watch

  • Iowa’s upcoming schedule and whether its late-game kicking success continues in conference play.
  • Iowa State’s penalty trends under Jimmy Rogers as the season progresses.
  • NBC’s continued slate of Big Ten broadcasts and viewership figures as Comcast reports future quarterly results.
