NFL’s Midweek Season Opener Outpaces Netflix, Giving Broadcast TV a Early Win

The NFL’s first-ever game played in Australia pushed the league’s traditional season kickoff off its usual Thursday perch, shifting NBC’s annual Kickoff Game to a Wednesday night slot. The unusual timing did little to dampen viewership, however, as the network’s broadcast of the season opener drew a larger audience than Netflix’s Thursday night NFL offerings.

The matchup marked the first time in league history that an NFL season officially began on a Wednesday, a scheduling quirk resulting from the league’s expansion into international markets. Despite the unfamiliar date, viewers appeared to follow the game to its new night, reinforcing the enduring draw of linear television for marquee live sports events.

For Comcast, which owns NBC, the ratings result underscores the continued value of its broadcast rights portfolio in a media landscape increasingly defined by streaming competition. Comcast shares traded at $24.88 on the day, up 0.08% from a prior close of $24.86, valuing the telecom and media conglomerate at roughly $92.5 billion.

The comparison between NBC’s broadcast numbers and Netflix’s Thursday night deliveries arrives as streamers continue to invest heavily in live sports rights. While platforms like Netflix have made aggressive moves into NFL content, the latest matchup suggests audiences for premier season-opening broadcasts still gravitate toward traditional TV in greater numbers.

Broadcasters have leaned on live sports as one of the last reliably appointment-viewing categories, and early-season NFL games routinely rank among the most-watched programs on television. The ability of the Kickoff Game to top a streaming competitor — even on an atypical weeknight — offers a data point in the ongoing contest between legacy networks and streaming platforms for live-event audiences.

What to watch

  • Weekly Nielsen and network-reported viewership figures for subsequent NFL broadcasts, including Thursday night matchups split between broadcast and streaming outlets.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings from Comcast, which may address advertising demand tied to NFL coverage and broader media segment performance.
  • Further scheduling impacts from the NFL’s international expansion, including how additional overseas games affect U.S. broadcast windows.
  • Netflix’s continued buildout of live sports programming and any disclosed viewership metrics for its NFL slate.
