Amazon Opens 2026 NFL Season With Bills-Lions Showcase at New Highmark Stadium

Amazon will kick off its 2026 Thursday Night Football schedule with a marquee matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions on Thursday night — the inaugural game at Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium. The assignment underscores how far the retail and streaming giant has come as an NFL broadcaster since taking over the package exclusively in 2022, a slot once thought unlikely to land such high-profile contests.

A scoring contest between two teams viewed as contenders for Super Bowl LXI anchoring the season’s first month also marks the start of a broader stadium construction wave across the league expected to run well into the 2030s. For play-by-play veteran Al Michaels, the broadcast will be the 10th venue debut of his career.

Audience Momentum

The game lands after a strong 2025 for NFL viewership overall. Amazon’s TNF audience rose 16% last season to an average of 15.3 million viewers per game — the highest percentage growth among full-season rights holders and the largest audience in the 20-year history of the franchise across any network. Since 2022, viewership on Amazon has climbed 60%, and the median viewer age of 49.4 is nearly seven years younger than the comparable linear NFL audience.

Amazon’s 2026 slate includes all 14 playoff teams from 2025, three holiday games on Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve, plus a wild-card playoff contest. “What you’ve seen with Thursday Night Football is a general raising of the floor in terms of what the quality of the games are, week-in and week-out,” Charlie Neiman, Amazon Prime Video’s head of sports partnerships, told Front Office Sports.

NFL broadcasting planning vice president Mike North credited the league’s more flexible, data-driven scheduling approach from its latest rights deals: “The ability to build the schedules that we can now, it’s very data-driven. But the core principles are the same. It’s still about the biggest games in the biggest windows.”

Streaming Tensions Simmer

The season opener arrives as scrutiny of the NFL’s streaming strategy intensifies in Washington, with regulators and lawmakers examining the league’s media approach. Fox Sports president of insights and analytics Mike Mulvihill recently argued that exclusive streaming sports packages have “failed” to grow audiences, warning they “alienate longtime fans without reaching new ones.” His critique focused largely on Netflix, which has broadened its own NFL package this season, though the debate touches all streamers in the sport — Amazon included.

Fox Corporation (FOXA), whose shares closed at $66.78, down 1.17% on the day, remains among the linear voices pushing back on the streaming migration even as its own NFL inventory competes for premium windows.
