Browns coach Todd Monken pushes back on Mike Tomlin’s “Browns is the Browns” jab

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken had a pointed response Monday to comments from Mike Tomlin, the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach turned NBC analyst, who mocked Cleveland with his familiar “Browns is the Browns” line during the network’s Football Night in America coverage.

Addressing reporters, Monken suggested that moving from the sideline to the broadcast desk changes the job description. “Everybody’s afforded their opinions. That’s what you do when you go from coaching to television,” he said, before rejecting the framing entirely. “I don’t see it that way. Every week is different. Every team is different. We just didn’t play well. That’s just one week. That’s not ‘Browns being Browns.’ That’s Browns playing poorly for one week.”

Monken, in his first season leading Cleveland, acknowledged that the surest rebuttal to critics is on-field performance, saying the only way to shift the narrative around the franchise is to play better football.

Broadcast context

Tomlin’s comments came on NBC’s Sunday night studio show, a property of Comcast (CMCSA). Comcast shares closed at $24.42, down 1.77% from the previous close of $24.86, giving the media and telecommunications company a market capitalization of roughly $92.5 billion. NBC’s NFL studio coverage routinely generates viral soundbites that ripple through league storylines, and Tomlin — a longtime Steelers head coach before moving into television — remains one of the platform’s most-quoted voices on division rivals.

What to watch

  • Whether Monken’s remarks fuel the rivalry when Cleveland and Pittsburgh meet during the regular season.
  • The Browns’ performance in the coming weeks, which will test Monken’s “one week” framing.
  • NBC and Football Night in America coverage, where Tomlin may have further comment as the AFC North race develops.
