Papa, 63, was admitted on Sept. 7 after complications from cardiomyopathy, a genetic heart condition he has managed since a 2023 diagnosis. According to the report, the condition worsened following a bone marrow transplant he underwent in March as part of his treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive cancer detected in his brain and spinal column before the prior season began. Physicians on UCSF Health’s Advanced Heart Failure team performed a diagnostic procedure on Tuesday to evaluate his cardiac function.

The hospitalization comes at a difficult moment in what had been shaping up as a comeback. Papa had recently received clearance from his oncologist to call the 49ers’ home games this season, and KNBR had announced he would rejoin the station in a part-time capacity roughly five weeks after laying him off. He had also been slated to appear on the 49ers’ pregame show on NBC Sports Bay Area ahead of the team’s season-opening win over the Rams in Melbourne, Australia. He will not be in the booth for Sunday’s home game against the Dolphins.

Papa’s health battle has carried a substantial financial toll. His medical care since the cancer diagnosis 14 months ago has generated significant expenses not covered by insurance. The David Benzer Strike Out Fear Foundation, a nonprofit, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help offset those costs.
