In a Wednesday statement, the committee sided with that argument. “The committee agreed that the instant replay protocols were not followed in the contest’s second-to-last play,” it wrote, adding that “had the protocols been followed, the outcome of the game would have been different.” Crucially, however, the committee noted it “does not have the authority to overturn the contest,” leaving the result official despite the admission of error.

The unusual combination — an explicit concession that the wrong team won, paired with no available remedy — drew swift reactions across college football media. Former NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz called out the committee for issuing a statement acknowledging a mistake while saying nothing could be done about it. Writer Rodger Sherman described the release as “the funniest possible statement they could have released.”

The episode lands amid a crowded college football media landscape, where broadcast partners face renewed scrutiny over game presentation and officiating transparency. Among companies with exposure to the space is Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), whose NBC network carries Big Ten football. Comcast shares closed at $23.73, down 3.22% from the prior close of $24.52, valuing the media and telecom giant at roughly $92.5 billion.

For Western Michigan, the acknowledgment offers little practical comfort: the loss remains on its record, with potential implications for bowl eligibility and College Football Playoff consideration that the MAC program had argued could have been affected by a different outcome.
