Cam Ward Pushes Back as Titans Fall Again and Questions Mount About the No. 1 Pick

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward found himself on the defensive this week after a local reporter challenged his self-assessment following a season-opening loss. Ward, the top selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, told reporters he considers himself a “very good quarterback,” while conceding there are parts of his game that still need work.

Nashville-area host Jared Stillman pressed the point, asking whether a genuinely very good NFL quarterback would have produced better results than Ward has so far. In a post on X dated September 16, Stillman laid out the numbers: a 3-15 record as a starter, a last-place QBR ranking in 2025, 26th this season, and a last-place PFF passing grade as a rookie, followed by a 107-of-108 mark in the 2026 preseason.

Ward declined to engage with the framing, instead pointing to opponents and defensive game plans as factors in his weekly production.

“It comes with the defense you’re playing. It comes with what the DC’s philosophy is,” he said, adding that not every game becomes a shootout and that box scores can look poor even when the focus is simply on winning — something he acknowledged the team has not done.

The record is hard to dispute. Tennessee went 3-14 in Ward’s rookie year and dropped its 2026 opener 23-10 to the New York Jets. Ward completed 19 of 32 attempts for 140 yards and a touchdown without a turnover, but no completion went longer than 14 yards and he spent much of the afternoon under duress.

His rookie campaign told a similar story: 3,309 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, seven interceptions, a 59.8% completion rate, and a league-high 55 sacks taken. Ward said he believes he does things other quarterbacks cannot, while noting his own shortcomings are a daily work in progress under a coaching staff he credited with pushing him.

Head coach Robert Saleh has publicly backed his young quarterback, calling him a “really, really, really good QB.” Still, the quarterback’s standing as the franchise’s long-term answer has become one of the early-season storylines in Nashville, and the scrutiny is unlikely to ease quickly.

The schedule offers no soft landing. Tennessee hosts the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, a matchup that will test both Ward and an offense that struggled to generate explosive plays in its first outing.
