Thompson, the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, is wrapping up a four-year, $36.2 million rookie contract that pays him $11.1 million in the coming campaign. The new extension averages out to roughly $31 million per season once it takes effect.

Defensive Anchor Rewarded

The extension comes off the heels of a breakout third season in which Thompson established himself as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders. He finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting, trailing only centers Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren, and earned All-Defensive first team honors — the first Piston to do so since Ben Wallace in 2005-06.

Thompson led the NBA with 2.0 steals per game while anchoring a Detroit defense that ranked second league-wide and forced more turnovers and recorded more blocks per game than any other team. Across 73 regular-season games (72 starts), he averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 26 minutes per night, shooting 52.5% from the field.

In 14 playoff appearances, Thompson bumped his workload to 30.5 minutes per game, contributing 8.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.8 blocks.
