US Vehicle Auction Market Projected to Approach $4.5 Billion by 2030 as Digital Platforms Take the Lead

The United States vehicle auction industry is on a steady growth track, according to a new market report covering the 2026 landscape. The sector generated $3.47 billion in revenue across 14.26 million units transacted in 2024, and is forecast to climb to $4.48 billion by 2030 — a compound annual growth rate of roughly 4% between 2025 and 2030.

What’s Driving the Growth

The report points to several converging forces reshaping the auction business. Online bidding platforms have moved from the margins to the mainstream, while artificial intelligence tools are being woven into vehicle inspection, pricing, and logistics workflows. Beyond technology, structural demand factors are at play: a strong used-car market, a steady supply of fleet and off-lease vehicles returning to market, continued volumes of salvage vehicles, and an emerging secondary market for electric vehicles as early EVs cycle back through resale channels.

Whole-car auctions and digital-first formats are the leading segments, reflecting how quickly the industry has shifted away from a purely physical, auction-lot model toward hybrid and fully online marketplaces.

The Competitive Field

Among the key players identified are Copart, OPENLANE, ACV Auctions, IAA, Manheim, EBlock, and eBay Motors. Several of these names are pure-play auction operators, while eBay Inc. brings auction-style vehicle sales into its broader marketplace business. eBay’s shares closed recently at $112.90, down about 0.09% from the prior session, with a market capitalization of approximately $46.02 billion. The company is classified in the Consumer Cyclical sector within the Internet Retail industry, and its eBay Motors unit competes directly with dedicated vehicle-auction platforms for online buyers.

The presence of consumer marketplace giants alongside specialized salvage and wholesale operators underscores how fragmented — and increasingly competitive — the space has become, with each segment chasing the same underlying supply of trade-ins, lease returns, and totaled vehicles.

Outlook

If the forecast holds, the industry would add roughly $1 billion in annual revenue over the second half of the decade. The pace of that expansion will depend heavily on how quickly online channels continue to absorb transaction volume and whether the EV secondary market develops the liquidity that traditional combustion-vehicle auctions already enjoy.

What to watch

  • Quarterly results from eBay, including any disclosure on eBay Motors volume trends
  • Earnings and gross merchandise value updates from auction specialists such as Copart, OPENLANE, and ACV Auctions
  • Data on used-vehicle pricing and off-lease return volumes, which feed auction supply
  • Development of EV remarketing channels as early-generation electric vehicles enter resale
