Belmont Park reopens with downsized grandstand as New York reshapes its horse-racing footprint

Horse racing returned to Belmont Park on Friday for the first time in more than three years, marking the debut of a rebuilt venue at the center of a $555m overhaul of New York’s racing infrastructure. The project included the closure of Aqueduct, the Queens racetrack that shut its doors in June after 132 years of operation.

The new Belmont is a striking departure from the venue that had occupied the Elmont site along the Queens–Nassau County line since 1905. The original grandstand, roughly 1.25m sq ft, has been replaced by a five-storey glass-fronted building of about 300,000 sq ft — less than a quarter of the old footprint. The downsizing reflects a sport that no longer anticipates packed weekday crowds.

The changes extend to the track itself. The famous mile-and-a-half dirt surface known as “Big Sandy” has been rebuilt using soil composition similar to Saratoga’s, with the finish line repositioned to create a longer stretch run. In total, four racing surfaces were reconstructed, the paddock grew 50% larger, and roughly 20 acres of green space were added for public access.

The reopening carries weight for the sport’s history. Belmont hosted Secretariat’s 31-length Triple Crown-clinching victory in 1973 and American Pharoah’s 2015 run that ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought. The track has also appeared in films ranging from Woody Allen’s work to Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi.

Not all longtime racegoers are sold on the modern design. Henry Miller, a 59-year-old retired Brooklyn sanitation worker with 47 years of attendance at New York tracks, told reporters the concrete-heavy aesthetic felt less welcoming than the ivy-covered brick of the old Belmont — and that Aqueduct’s closure “broke my heart.”

The broadcast dimension of the reopening remains relevant to the sport’s media economics. Fox Corporation, which airs racing content through its sports platforms, saw its shares trade at $64.45 on the day, down 0.82% from a prior close of $64.98, valuing the entertainment company at roughly $26.8bn. Coverage of the new venue already featured Fox Sports personnel on site during opening day.

For New York racing operators, the wager embedded in the project is that a smaller, modernized Belmont — paired with Aqueduct’s closure — can sustain the sport with a leaner physical plant and an upgraded fan experience rather than relying on cavernous grandstands built for an earlier era.
