Little Brown Jug Marks 81st Running Sept. 24 as Ohio’s Premier Harness Race

While Louisville draws national attention each May with the Kentucky Derby, central Ohio has its own storied racing tradition: the Little Brown Jug, which returns Sept. 24 for its 81st edition at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio.

First contested in 1946, the race became a founding leg of the Triple Crown of Pacing in the 1950s and remains one of harness racing’s signature events. Harness Racing Update columnist John Berry recently urged readers to attend, calling the event “the greatest show on earth” and suggesting a cup of fries with malt vinegar as the Jug’s answer to the Derby’s mint julep.

About the race

Harness racing features standardbred horses pulling light two-wheeled carts. The Jug is a pacing event, meaning horses move both legs on the same side of their body in unison — distinct from trotters, whose diagonal leg pairs move together. The field consists of 3-year-old standardbreds, with elimination heats leading to a final that carries an $800,000 purse.

More than a horse race

The Jug is the centerpiece of the Delaware County Fair, which runs Sept. 19 through 26 and includes carnival rides, 4-H competitions and other county-fair staples. Race day also features a 4-H and Future Farmers of America Horse and Pony Fun Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fairgrounds’ horse show arena.

On-track amenities include a trackside Jug Social Tent with craft beer and cocktails, plus premium seating in the Top of the Stretch and Backstretch tents, which come with drink tickets and private betting tellers.

Tickets and attendance

Grandstand tickets range from $30 to $50, while premium tent seating is priced at $50 or $125. General fair admission on non-race days is $8. Tickets are available through the Little Brown Jug and Delaware County Fair websites.

The event underscores the breadth of the American horse-racing economy, a sector that includes major operators such as Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN), which runs live racing venues and wagering businesses alongside its flagship Kentucky Derby. Shares of Churchill Downs closed at $81.91, down 1.66% from the prior close of $83.29, valuing the company at roughly $6.07 billion.
