PFF’s Grading Controversy Puts Sports Analytics Under a Microscope

PFF’s Grading Controversy Puts Sports Analytics Under a Microscope

Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season was supposed to be about on-field storylines. Instead, one of football’s most influential analytics companies finds itself at the center of a credibility debate that has followed its change of ownership earlier this year.

Pro Football Focus, widely known as PFF, built its reputation on assigning every NFL and Division I college player a grade on a 0-to-100 scale, blending quantitative data with analyst judgment. Its ratings are cited across media coverage and, since Cris Collinsworth acquired a majority stake in 2014, have periodically appeared on NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcasts. That broadcast relationship ties into the broader media ecosystem that includes Comcast Corporation, whose NBCUniversal unit carries Sunday Night Football; Comcast shares recently traded at $22.74, down 1.22% on the day from a prior close of $23.02, valuing the telecom and media company at roughly $92.5 billion.

The current backlash stems from a set of Week 1 grades that many fans found difficult to reconcile with what they watched. Trent Williams and Myles Garrett drew nearly identical marks despite Williams largely neutralizing Garrett throughout their matchup. Quarterback Jaxson Dart received a middling grade after what observers described as a nearly mistake-free performance. Most notably, Caleb Williams’ grade diverged enough from public perception that PFF published a dedicated article defending its methodology — an unusual step that amplified, rather than quieted, the scrutiny.

What makes this round of criticism linger is the company’s ownership transition. PFF was sold earlier this year to Teamworks, and the new ownership quickly carried out mass layoffs — a move that capped what critics have described as a years-long erosion of the company’s veteran analysts. Former employees have discussed the departures publicly on podcasts and in reported pieces, adding to the sense among some fans that the grading operation has changed in ways the company has not fully explained.

Social media speculation has since turned to whether artificial intelligence now plays a role in generating grades. PFF has historically declined to publish the specifics of how its grades are calculated, treating its methodology as proprietary, which has left the company with limited ways to rebut such claims. Unlike baseball’s Statcast-driven metrics, PFF’s football grades rest heavily on human interpretation of each play, making analyst turnover a particularly sensitive issue for the product’s consistency.

The episode illustrates a broader tension in the sports analytics business: subscriber-funded grading models depend on trust in a process that companies rarely disclose in full. When on-field results and published grades visibly diverge, that trust becomes the product’s most exposed asset.

What to watch

  • Whether PFF publishes further methodology explainers following the Caleb Williams grade controversy.
  • Any public comment from Teamworks on staffing, grading processes, or AI usage.
  • Additional departures of long-tenured analysts, and how grading consistency compares week to week.
  • NBC’s continued use of PFF data during Sunday Night Football broadcasts.
