NBC Sports has added a prominent voice to its returning NBA coverage, hiring Doc Rivers as a game analyst ahead of the network’s basketball programming resuming next month. The veteran coach will appear across NBC, Peacock, and NBCSN as part of the company’s expanded basketball lineup.

Rivers brings an unusually broad résumé to the role. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach, led the Boston Celtics to the 2008 NBA championship, spent 13 seasons as an NBA player, and has previous broadcasting experience. In total, he has spent more than four decades around the league in playing and coaching roles.

The hire underscores the scale of Comcast’s investment in bringing NBA basketball back under the NBC umbrella. Parent company Comcast — which traded at $22.97 in recent action, up 0.79% from a prior close of $22.79, with a market cap of roughly $92.5 billion — has been building out its Media segment, and live sports rights have become a central pillar of the strategy for both linear NBC and the Peacock streaming service.

For Comcast’s Media segment, marquee analyst talent is a key differentiator as networks compete for basketball audiences across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. Rivers’ championship pedigree and long-standing relationships around the league give NBC Sports a recognizable figure as it reintroduces itself to NBA viewers, particularly on Peacock, where streaming-exclusive windows have become a growing share of national NBA rights packages.

Rivers joins at a moment when the league’s media landscape is more fragmented than at any point in decades, with multiple outlets splitting national windows.
