Chiefs could compete with 49ers, Raiders in trade talks for Jaguars Pro Bowl WR

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking a whole lot better than they did a year ago so far this season. At 3-0 heading into a Week 4 matchup against the 3-0 Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs have a chance to cement their status as Super Bowl contenders once again.

A loss to the Raiders wouldn’t prove they’re not contenders, but it would make things a bit more questionable. But if they do lose, what will be clear is that this Chiefs team needs some more help. One obvious area of need is in the wide receiver room.

That’s why it shouldn’t be a surprise that ESPN’s Dan Graziano named the Chiefs as a trade fit for Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl WR Brian Thomas Jr., but it’s not a simple market, as Graziano speculates the Raiders and San Francisco 49ers could also compete for BTJ at this year’s trade deadline.

"But the 2024 first-rounder isn’t a big part of the Jaguars’ offense right now, and there are a lot of teams (Chiefs? 49ers? Raiders?) looking for difference-makers at wide receiver," Graziano writes.

Thomas is one of the more obvious trade candidates of the 2026 NFL season. While the Jaguars might not want to admit it, trading BTJ would make the most sense for their team moving forward.

Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, Travis Hunter, and Josh Cameron are a good enough WR room to make up for Thomas if he were to be traded. If he is on the move, it’s likely for a solid haul as well.

The Chiefs, 49ers, and Raiders would all make sense as landing spots. They’re all currently 3-0 and all dealing with some question marks in the WR room.

While the Raiders might pass on a trade with the idea of drafting a young wide receiver for more long-term upside, the 49ers and Chiefs could very well be the top competition for Thomas this season.

Kansas City has Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, but there are questions about both, and adding someone like Thomas would make a lot of sense in what’s clearly a year of contention for Kansas City.

When it comes to the 49ers, they’re dealing with injuries to De’Zhaun Stribling, Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, and now even Mike Evans. They really could use WR help and could be the Chiefs’ top competition for Thomas.

While the Chiefs don’t need WR help as badly as the 49ers, someone like Thomas could be the difference-maker to turn the Chiefs from a good offense to a great one this season.

But, as Graziano notes, they might have to compete with the Raiders and 49ers, among other teams, in pursuit of the Pro Bowler from the Jaguars this Fall.
