Kelsey Mitchell: ‘I have to be selfish’ for 2027 Fever free agency decision
Indiana Fever superstar guard Kelsey Mitchell said she has to be "selfish" with her upcoming free agency decision, indirectly casting some doubt on her return to the franchise she’s played for since 2018.
While speaking to reporters for her 2026 exit interview on Saturday after the team’s playoff elimination on Thursday, Mitchell spoke on the need to prioritize her needs first as she contemplates her WNBA future.
"I think that’s where I am in my career," Mitchell said, via ESPN’s Kareem Copeland. "What I probably need and what’s probably best for me. So, I have to be selfish in that room. But I think, ultimately, being on the Fever and being a part of an organization that does come with a lot of ups and downs, what factors in and what is important for me is, obviously, having a good chemistry on and off the floor. I’ve only been with one team my entire career, so it’s all kind of like figuring this out, It’s hard, man."
Losing Mitchell, who averaged 24.7 points in an MVP-level season, would change the immediate trajectory of the Fever. The team would still have superstars in guard Caitlin Clark and forward Aliyah Boston, but the team would need a major splash to replace Mitchell and keep apace in the WNBA to remain a title contender. If the Fever lost Mitchell and could’t replace her with another superstar, the team might actually take a step back in 2027.
Unless the Fever are able to sign a superstar player like Napheesa Collier, re-signing Mitchell is the team’s top priority unless they can find a way to keep the championship aspirations float without her. At least right now, it sounds like there’s a real chance that Mitchell may decide to play elsewhere in 2027 and beyond.
When is 2027 WNBA free agency?
The timeframe is likely late January/early February 2027.
