Kentucky vs. South Carolina score today, SEC football live updates
COLUMBIA, SC — Vicari Swain is the best punt returner in South Carolina‘s history. With two touchdowns this season, he’s up to five for his career, which moves the Georgia native to the top of the list in the program’s record book.
Yet his prowess extends well beyond the borders of the Palmetto State.
His five punt return TDs are surpassed by only three players in the SEC‘s annals: Alabama’s Javier Arenas (seven), Kentucky‘s Derek Abney (six) and Texas A&M’s Christian Kirk (six).
As UK prepares to face SC this afternoon in Columbia, South Carolina, one wonders: Why would first-year Kentucky coach Will Stein even permit his club to give Swain an opportunity for a game-changing return?
"I think there (are) a lot of different things that you can attempt to do," Stein said. "The No. 1 thing is run down and cover — and force fair catches, if you can. But he’s really creative. He’s savvy back there — and very confident, obviously.
"So it’s about running down, covering, keeping leverage on the football, and then ultimately, tackling the ball carrier."

While Kentucky (3-1, 1-1 SEC) enters with a better record than South Carolina (2-2, 0-2), the Gamecocks still are slight favorites (in oddsmakers’ minds) to hold serve and notch a victory at home. If the Wildcats win, it will end a four-game skid in the series. And it’ll be an officially recognized result: Kentucky’s most recent on-field triumph over South Carolina (16-10 in 2021) was erased due to NCAA violations.
Will the Wildcats keep up their winning ways? Or will the Gamecocks circle the wagons at Williams-Brice Stadium?
