2026 USMNT Friendly: Scouting Canada

October 4, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

HOUSTON, TEXAS – JULY 04: Jesse Marsch, Head Coach of Canada, applauds fans after the team’s 0-3 defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Canada and Morocco at Houston Stadium on July 04, 2026 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The super-sized international window is drawing to a close, with the United States Men’s National Team enjoying a long camp to build chemistry in the aftermath of a disappointing early exit from the World Cup. After friendlies against Peru, Chile, and Mexico, there remains one match, taking on another CONCACAF rival with designs on ruling the region. Canada, like the other two co-hosts, is coming off a similarly underwhelming Round-of-16 finish last summer, albeit while making the program’s best-ever performance. Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota – a 19,400-seat soccer-specific stadium with a natural-grass surface – hosts the fixture.

This is the 43rd all-time meeting between the two sides, with the USMNT holding a 17-12-13 advantage but dropping the most recent match in the third-place playoff at the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League (1-2). Ranked internationally by FIFA, Canada finished second in Group B at the World Cup by drawing Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1), topping Qatar (6-0), and falling to Switzerland (1-2) before beating South Africa (1-0) and losing to Morocco (0-3) in the knockout phase. In recent friendlies, Les Rouges topped Chile (1-0) and Peru (2-0).

Jesse Marsch was appointed to the manager position in May of 2024, described as a “transformational leader who will drive progress.” Prior to the World Cup, the federation signed him to a new four-year deal and praised his work as “exceptional,” having “instilled a clear identity and raised the competitive bar.” The 52-year-old Wisconsinite and former U.S. international has experience leading the Montreal Impact, the New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, and Leeds United. He is praised as being “a good fit with the mentality of the players,” meshing his tactics with “a blue-collar team that gets down, rolls up [the] sleeves, and gets after it.”

Marsch initially named a 26-player roster for the international window. Major League Soccer is home to nine of the call-ups, while 15 compete in various European competitions. Notable absences include Jonathan Osorio, Alistair Johnston, Alphonso Davies, Kamal Miller, Ismaël Koné, Maxime Crépeau, Ali Ahmed, Moïse Bombito, Joel Waterman, Jayden Nelson, and Marcelo Flores. Derek Cornelius, Jeevan Badwal, and Alfie Jones departed due to injuries, with Jamie Knight-Lebel and Justin Smith stepping in as replacements.

Marsch typically deploys his team in a 4-4-2 formation, endeavoring to “take the game to opponents, build pressing traps, and create chances” with quick-strike, vertical attacking. His “maplepressing” tactics are described as “demanding, fast and punishing, and defensively sound,” a “high-intensity style built to capitalize on opponents and force defensive mistakes.” The compact blocks are “wide enough to mark the flanks but sturdy enough not to get overwhelmed in the middle,” attempting to force the ball to the wing and then pouncing.

Inter Miami’s Dayne St. Clair was named to the MLS Best XI in 2025 and has phenomenal reactions and explosive athleticism to pull off wonder-saves and stymie short-range opportunities. He uses his six-three frame to cover the entirety of the net with ease, particularly on penalties, and can be quite successful with the ball at his feet as a reliable option in the build-up. The “imposing” Owen Goodman of Dundee could lead the program’s next generation, considered “capable of making the [stops] that others cannot” and “thriving off big moments” with “lightning-quick movements.” The former England youth international is deliberate when going to ground and rarely wastes a step, oftentimes employing his entire body in keeping the ball out of the net.

Luc de Fougerolles of Real Salt Lake is coming off his first full season of first-team soccer and four starts at the World Cup, p
