Arizona Digest. Phoenix Rising FC loses close game at New Mexico
Fall has returned to Arizona, and there’s plenty of activity, including college sports and more. From the Cardinals and Suns to the hosting of national high school events, UFC and soccer, here are updates on sports news and events happening around Arizona.
Phoenix Rising FC postseason hopes in jeopardy after loss
Phoenix Rising FC fell 2-1 to New Mexico United on Sunday night, Oct. 4, in Albuquerque, giving up an 81st-minute go-ahead goal to break a tie.
Rising FC scored in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on a corner kick that found Kelvin Arase to level the match. Second-place New Mexico’s win earned it a playoff spot in the USL Western Conference.
Rising FC (8-9-10) sits five points out of a playoff spot with only three regular season games left to play. They likely need three wins to reach the mark, with two at home, starting with Las Vegas on Oct. 10.
Former Rising player Charlie Dennis assisted on New Mexico’s first goal in the fourth minute. Phoenix attempted 24 shots, its highest total in a single match in the USL Championship this season.
The Rising also had 75% of possession over the last 15 minutes of regulation.
