NBC goes all in on Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft era on ‘Football Night In America’

Mike Tomlin is thriving in studio on NBC’s Football Night in America and in Minecraft, and his two new worlds collided on Sunday night.

NBC took the most obvious layup of all time, transforming the FNIA broadcast into a Minecraft user interface and running a highlight package from Tomlin’s viral Minecraft city reveal and his Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance last week.

“Just in case you missed it, okay, Coach Tomlin’s tour of his Minecraft city broke the actual internet,” FNIA host Maria Taylor said. “Look at that: 3 million views, Coach! You knew that was gonna happen when you posted it?”

“No, I had no idea,” Tomlin said.

Taylor ran through some more of Tomlin’s Minecraft video stats and facts, which are arguably more impressive than Tomlin’s 19-straight winning seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach.

NBC’s cherry on top came in the form of a Minecraft version of Bank of America Stadium, where the Carolina Panthers hosted the Detroit Lions for Sunday Night Football, followed by the Minecraft versions of Tomlin, Taylor, Devin McCourty, and Jason Garrett sitting at the FNIA desk.

“You didn’t design it, but do you approve of it?” Taylor asked Tomlin.

“Hey, as a Minecraft lover, I’m appreciating all of this, to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said.

McCourty and Tomlin traded lighthearted barbs about how their Minecraft characters had more hair — somehow, Garrett escaped that shade — and Tomlin quipped that McCourty’s “Minecraft guy looked a little taller.”

In January, Tomlin stepped down after 19 years in Pittsburgh, and while he hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching, he also hasn’t given the NFL any reason to expect him back on a sideline anytime soon.

In September, McCourty appeared on Up & Adams with Kay Adams and disclosed how “genuinely happy” Tomlin seemed in his burgeoning media stardom.

“I know a lot of people are wondering when he’ll be back,” McCourty said, in part. “They’re asking is their favorite team going to call him, and maybe, like, you never know. But I will say, right now, he is having a blast. Like, just everything we’re doing, he’s soaking it in. He’s having fun.”

Now that he’s a bonafide YouTuber and Minecraft master, Tomlin seems overjoyed — and mighty comfortable in the analyst chair.
