NFL referee Jeff Seeman had some harsh words for Trey McBride during the Atlanta Falcons’ game against the New York Giants.
Seeman, who was serving as the line judge during the game, seemingly cursed at McBride who was appealing a call he made.
And according to one sideline reporter who was in earshot of both the player and the referee, the official’s comments were in response to some very benign protesting.
Trey McBride told NFL referee he was ‘ruining the game’
CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala was right by the sideline when Trey McBride and line judge Jeff Seeman got into a heated verbal altercation.
While the referee was seen using some foul language, Kinkhabwala revealed that McBride only pled his case with Seeman and told him that he was ruining the game.
“I was standing right there. What’s wild is that it all started with Trey McBride saying ‘please’ when pleading his case for a PI flag.
“He was heated for sure, but I never heard a curse from him. The harshest he got was, ‘You’re ruining the game.’”
If that is the case, and McBride didn’t use any harsh language when asking for a pass interference call, then Seeman’s reactions should be looked into.
The NFL and the NFLPA are looking into the situation, as they felt that Seeman crossed the line with his actions and should be held accountable.
According to Adam Schefter, the NFL is opening an investigation into the situation after pressure from the NFLPA.
“The NFL said it is reviewing the situation in which an official appears to use profanity at Cardinals TE Trey McBride. The NFLPA Executive Director JC Tretter called for the NFL to hold the official accountable.”
The Athletic reached out to the NFL Referees Association for a comment on the matter, but received no response from them on the matter.
Players and coaches have been reprimanded and punished for behaving the exact same way in the past. If the rules are applied consistently, Seeman should be similarly punished for his actions.
