Dodgers-Braves: Freddie Freeman booed, robbed of playoff home run in front of his former home fans in Atlanta

Freddie Freeman delivered countless clutch moments for the home team at Truist Park in 12 seasons with the Atlanta Braves.

On Tuesday, he came came oh-so close to coming through for the road team in front of an Atlanta crowd that now greets him with boos. But Mauricio Dubón had other ideas.

With a man on and no outs in Game 3 of the NLDS between the Braves and Freeman’s Los Angeles Dodgers, Freeman hit a deep shot off Chris Sale that appeared destined to clear the short fence in left field.

But Dubón had a bead on the ball off the bat from his position in left field. He leapt at the fence in front of the Dodgers’ bullpen and corralled the ball before it cleared the fence.

Replay shows that the ball was almost certainly clearing the fence had Dubón not been there to make the play.

But he was, and he did. And he saved Sale and the Braves from a 2-0 third-inning deficit. The Dodgers went on to load the bases in the frame, but didn’t bring anybody home, and the game went to the bottom of the third locked in a scoreless tie.

It was another tough moment for Freeman, who was greeted by an Atlanta crowd that used to adore him with a chorus of boos during his first at-bat.

Freeman won an MVP and a World Series with the Braves during his 12 seasons with the franchise. But Tuesday’s was his first postseason game in Atlanta since he left to sign with the rival Dodgers, whom he’s since helped lead to two World Series titles.

There will surely be a chance for Braves fans to celebrate Freeman again once he’s retired. But for now, there’s no love lost with a trip to the NLCS on the line.
