LeBron James has been mocked by NBA fans after a preseason clash with Josh Minott during his first appearance for the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 41-year-old made his Sixers debut against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center on Thursday night as Philadelphia suffered a 114-108 defeat.
James played 18 minutes before sitting out the second half, finishing with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal. Despite the loss, he looked comfortable running Philadelphia’s offence alongside Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.
Fans mock LeBron James after Josh Minott exchange
A clip of James and Minott quickly circulated on social media with the caption claiming the four-time NBA champion had been tested by the young Nets forward.
The moment prompted plenty of jokes from fans who questioned whether James can still intimidate opponents at this stage of his career.
One supporter wrote: “Crying already.” Another added: “This guy is such a fake tough guy.” A third joked: “He’s ready for @thebig3.”
The criticism continued with one fan declaring: “It’s over! Just retire, old man.” Another focused on Minott’s reaction: “Josh was not afraid at all.”
James’ familiar reaction also became a talking point, with one supporter asking: “Why Bron always do that lil shoulder shrug every time?” Another fan laughed: “The shoulder shrug. Lmao. Like if that’s going to scare anybody.”
The harshest reaction came from a supporter who wrote: “He’s an old man, age has finally caught up with LeBron. He can barely jump now.”
The social-media reaction comes despite James putting together an encouraging first outing in Philadelphia. He went 1-for-1 from the field and made all eight of his free throws while controlling the offence for much of his time on court.
James and the Sixers will now continue their preseason preparations before the regular season begins on October 20 against the defending champions New York Knicks.
