Chiefs’ Andy Reid announces three roster moves ahead of Chargers game
The Kansas City Chiefs have made three roster moves ahead of their NFL Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed the changes as Kansas City prepares for its first game after the bye week.
ESPN’s reporter Jeremy Fowler shared the update on X, writing, “Some roster movement in Kansas City: Per head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs are placing WR Tyquan Thornton on Injured Reserve, elevating LB Cam Jones from the practice squad and signing WR Justin Watson to the practice squad.”

Thornton’s move to injured reserve is the biggest development for Kansas City. The wide receiver suffered a dislocated left ankle during the Chiefs’ Week 4 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
He caught a 55-yard pass before suffering the injury. Thornton had recorded 219 receiving yards and two touchdowns across four games, providing a valuable option for Patrick Mahomes.
His absence leaves Kansas City with fewer experienced options at wide receiver. Watson’s return offers familiarity, although signing him to the practice squad does not automatically place him on the active roster.

Watson previously played for Kansas City from 2022 through 2024, winning two Super Bowl championships with the franchise. He spent the 2025 season with the Houston Texans before leaving during the 2026 preseason.
His familiarity with Reid’s offensive system and Mahomes could help him contribute quickly if promoted. However, Kansas City must still assess its available receivers before deciding whether to elevate him for Sunday.
Cam Jones, meanwhile, has been elevated from the practice squad to strengthen the linebacker group and special teams. His promotion provides additional depth behind established linebackers Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill.

The Chiefs enter the Chargers matchup with a 4-0 record, while Los Angeles is struggling at 0-5. Kansas City will look to maintain its strong start despite Thornton’s injury.
The roster moves reflect a practical response to injuries rather than a major overhaul. With the AFC West schedule intensifying, Kansas City needs reliable depth to keep its offense productive and its defense prepared.
Thornton’s absence will test the receiving group, while Watson’s potential return gives Reid another familiar option.
