Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson is expected to miss multiple weeks with the injury he suffered against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, according to a report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Wilson suffered the injury in the second quarter of the Steelers’ 34-22 victory, when attempting to secure a catch just before halftime. He was originally ruled to have made the catch, with a Colts defender attempting to rip the ball from his hands as he went to the ground. The call was reversed on replay review.
Wilson immediately got to his feet and grabbed his hand. After the timeout for replay was called, he left the field and walked straight to the Steelers locker room with a team trainer. He did not return to the game and was ruled out with a hand injury.
After the game, Wilson was seen leaving the stadium with a large wrap on his left hand.
Wilson is expected to get a second opinion on the status of his injury, which Fowler reported to be a finger, and will miss “a couple” weeks. The Steelers have three games remaining before their Week 9 bye, including a trip to Paris in Week 7.
The Steelers entered Sunday’s game already without starting wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., who was placed on the injured reserve list on Saturday after suffered a mid-week setback to his foot injury.
Just before Wilson’s injury on Sunday, the Steelers also lost wide receiver Ben Skowronek to a calf injury. He also did not return to the game.
Veteran backup Brandon Smith was elevated from the practice squad to replace Pittman on Sunday. The Steelers have three other wide receivers on their practice squad: Isaiah Hodgins, Max Hurleman and Brandon Johnson. Hurleman is eligible to be reinstated from the practice squad injured reserve this week.
Wilson had been in the middle of the best season of his career and before his injury, was leading the Steelers with 188 yards over the first four games of the year. He also has already tied his career high with two touchdown receptions.
