Did the Ravens Make the Right Move for Cam Jurgens?

October 13, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

On Oct. 7, the Baltimore Ravens made a shocking trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire center Cam Jurgens after injuries to their top three centers forced them to start rookie Olaivavega Ioane in an emergency role against the Tennessee Titans. The Ravens gave up a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to the Eagles for two-time Pro Bowler Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

It was a shocking trade for both sides, as the Eagles have been dealing with injuries and were forced to have center Jurgens play left guard after starting guard, veteran Landon Dickerson, was placed on injured reserve with a bone bruise.

Did Baltimore Overpay?

While Jurgens is a two-time Pro Bowler, fans from both sides are asking whether the Ravens overpaid for a player who is having a poor season since moving to left guard. According to Pro Football Focus, Jurgens ranks 73rd out of 74 qualifying guards in overall grade this season, with a 38.7 grade through five weeks. He has struggled in both pass and run blocking since moving to his new position.

The good news for the Ravens is that in Week 1, when he was playing his natural position at center, he had an above-average pass-blocking PFF grade. He allowed no hurries, pressures, sacks or quarterback hits. Since moving away from his natural position to play guard in his last three games, he has allowed one sack, one quarterback hit, 10 hurries and 12 pressures. For many Baltimore fans, the Cam Jurgens who plays center and the Cam Jurgens who plays left guard are two different players.

The problem for many Ravens fans this year is that it’s a now-or-never year. They have an aging roster whose Super Bowl window looks like it’s closing, and they can’t afford to have the version of Jurgens who’s been terrible at guard. The Ravens know this, and with this being such a big year for the team, they’re taking a calculated risk by betting that Jurgens can return to his Pro Bowl form.

A Potential Bargain at Center

If Jurgens can return to the level of play that made him a two-time Pro Bowler, the cost the Ravens took to get him will look like a steal. Jurgens signed a four-year $68 million contract extension in 2025.

Former Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, who signed with the Raiders in March, is earning $27 million per year under a three-year, $81 million contract. A top-end center is looking like it will soon cost teams more than $30 million per year. If the Ravens can fix Jurgens, they can get a high-end center for almost half the price.

Aside from the Ravens need at center, Cam Jurgens is contractually attractive.

At 27 years old, Jurgens is under contract the next four years and has a $1 million salary-cap figure this season and a $4 million salary-cap figure next season. https://t.co/0MPoqQPfoF

Outlook

Some may argue that surrendering a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick is too much, especially for a player who is currently performing poorly. The Ravens were in a difficult position, with no obvious solution to their center problem, so Jurgens could be their breakthrough.

To win a Super Bowl, teams often have to be comfortable taking risks. While it’s true that a trade like this could blow up in Baltimore’s face. A trade like this could backfire, but if the gamble pays off, the Ravens could be much better off. Jurgens playing at a Pro Bowl level would give Baltimore a competent offensive line that can not only protect star quarterback Lamar Jackson but also create running lanes for star running back Derrick Henry.

Fans should remember that when the weather gets cold and the playoffs begin in January, a strong offensive line is essential to surviving each game.
