The first month of the 2026 NFL season was brutal on fantasy football managers from an injury perspective. A number of early-round draft picks missed at least one game in the first four weeks, including Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
Week 5 finally provided some reprieve to beleaguered managers.
That isn’t to say that every fantasy football manager emerged unscathed, though. One consensus first-round pick did have an injury scare, although it sounds like he’ll avoid missing significant time. A few other players suffered concussions that will put their Week 6 status into jeopardy.
Every week, we’ll be breaking down the biggest injury news that could shape your fantasy football lineup moving forward. Let’s dive into all of the most notable updates ahead of Week 6.
Notable QB Injuries
Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (ribs)
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered an injury to his ribs at the end of regulation against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. He was able to return for one snap before the start of overtime, but backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took over for him in the extra period (and immediately threw a game-ending interception).
Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday that the rib injury “is not considered serious,” and Penix “might be able to return” for the Falcons’ Week 6 game against the Chicago Bears. “But the team wants to be cautious and see him practice this week first before deciding on the next move,” Schefter added.
Tagovailoa figures to draw the start if Penix can’t go, but that would be a major downgrade for an offense that just started to find its footing. Running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London would still be must-starts even if Tagovailoa is under center, but tight end Kyle Pitts would be a fringe starter at best.
Notable RB Injuries
Texans RB David Montgomery (groin)
David Montgomery began his Houston Texans tenure with a bang by piling up 79 total yards and three touchdowns in his team’s Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Over the next four weeks, he totaled 78 rushing yards, 48 receiving yards and zero touchdowns.
While the Texans finally got their first win of the season against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5, they lost Montgomery to a groin injury in the first half. On Monday, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters that “we’ll see how he continues to progress,” but “right now, we’re looking at a week-to-week injury there.”
The Texans face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6 and New York Giants in Week 7 before going on bye in Week 8. Woody Marks, who had 15 carries for 62 yards and four catches for 23 yards on Sunday, will be a must-start until Montgomery returns, even against the Jaguars’ stout run defense.
Patriots RB TreVeyon Henderson (ankle)
The New England Patriots blew out the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5, but it didn’t come without a cost. They lost running back TreVeyon Henderson to an ankle injury and starting left tackle Will Campbell to a knee injury in the span of only three plays in the second quarter, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Prior to his departure, Henderson had four carries for 22 yards and one reception for 16 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson led the way for the Pats on the ground with 13 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown along with three receptions for 21 yards, while Corey Kiner added six carries for 52 yards, most of which came during garbage time.
If Henderson isn’t able to suit up against the New York Jets in Week 6, Stevenson would be a must-start (if he isn’t already).
Browns RB Quinshon Judkins (ankle)
Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins didn’t leave his team’s Week 5 loss to the New York Jets early, but he was spotted in a walking boot after the game. On Monday, head coach Todd Monken said Judkins suffered a “tweak” in his ankle and is day-to-day, according to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi.
The Browns also lost fellow running back Raheim Sanders to a hip injury on Sunday. That could help explain why they signed running back Audric Estime off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad on Monday, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported.
Judkins finished Sunday’s loss with 14 carries for 44 scoreless yards along with three receptions for six yards. Even if he’s able to suit up in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens, it’ll be difficult to start him with much confidence, particularly given the risk of reinjury.
Eagles RB Will Shipley (foot)
Will Shipley’s time as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting running back was short-lived.
With Saquon Barkley (hamstring) and Tank Bigsby (core muscle) both sidelined, Shipley drew the start for the Eagles against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. However, he suffered “a partial tear of his plantar fascia,” which “could sideline him multiple weeks,” according to Schefter.
Bigsby is on injured reserve, so he’s guaranteed to miss at least three more weeks, although Barkley appears to be nearing his return. If none of Barkley, Bigsby and Shipley can go in Week 6, the Eagles would be down to practice-squad call-ups such as Dameon Pierce or off-the-street free agents, none of whom would be worth starting in 10- or 12-team leagues.
Notable WR Injuries
Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb (quad)
For the first four weeks of the season, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb almost single-handedly carried his fantasy managers. In Week 5, however, he finished with a season-low two catches for nine yards before departing the Cowboys’ loss late with a quadriceps injury.
On Friday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Lamb suffered a quad bruise that is “not believed to be serious.” He added that the Cowboys “do not expect this to be a long-term injury,” although he did not say that Lamb is certain to play in Week 6.
Ryan Flournoy could be worth a spot start if Lamb does miss the Cowboys’ game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, although the passing offense would likely be funneled through George Pickens. Pickens is a must-start either way, but he’d have top-five WR upside without Lamb hogging targets.
49ers WR Deebo Samuel (hamstring)
The San Francisco 49ers have been churning through wide receivers faster than Spinal Tap went through drummers. After losing Ricky Pearsall (knee), De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle), Demarcus Robinson (ankle) and Christian Kirk (calf) earlier this season, the Nin
