CHN Daily: Bedard’s Impact; Blackhawks Rookie Forwards; DeBrincat Extension
With all 32 teams in action on Tuesday for the NHL’s Frozen Frenzy, there’s plenty to discuss in the Daily!
For the Chicago Blackhawks, Connor Bedard helped ease some of the early-season pressure around the team by returning from offseason shoulder surgery and recording a point in a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Bedard made the Blackhawks look like a much more dangerous and capable team in his season debut, but it wasn’t his effort alone that led to the win against Sidney Crosby and the Pens.
Rookies Anton Frondell and Roman Kantserov were both outstanding, while Teuvo Teravainen netted his first two goals of the season. Plus, the top power-play unit finally converted.
More in the links for the recap from the Blackhawks’ second win of the 2026-27 campaign.
Also in Blackhawks news, Nick Lardis was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL on Tuesday, which is a justified decision by the front office.
Around the league, Alex DeBrincat signed a long-term extension, Brady Tkachuk finally broke through with his new team, and Connor McDavid remains red-hot for the Edmonton Oilers.
All that & more in the Daily!
Blackhawks Preseason, News & Trade Rumors
Chicago Hockey Now: The Blackhawks got a major lineup boost against the Penguins, with Connor Bedard making his season debut, now fully recovered from offseason shoulder surgery. Bedard looked sharp in the 5-3 win, while Roman Kantserov and Teuvo Teravainen each scored twice.
Anton Frondell also tallied two assists in the win and leads the Blackhawks with six points in seven games. Perhaps the most impressive aspect from Frondell’s performance is that most of his ice time came against Sidney Crosby. Head coach Jeff Blashill showered Frondell with praise following the win, and for good reason. He was excellent.
Anton Frondell played 10:10 of his 17:26 against Sidney Crosby tonight. He had two assists and won 11/18 draws vs. Crosby.
Blashill on Frondell postgame: "He’s got a real good ability to check for offense, and he’s still just growing and learning. He’s just at the cusp of what…

Kantserov was just as sharp, if not better. The 22-year-old produced his first career multi-goal and multi-point effort and now leads the team with three goals this season. Kantserov had a team-high four shots on goal and five individual scoring chances against Pittsburgh.
He celebrated the win with a PBR in the locker room. What a performance, and what a character.

When Kantserov, Bedard, and Patrick Kane were first put together as the top line at practice, there were some concerns about the combination’s lack of size. But what helps their cause is Kantserov’s willingness to go to the dirty areas and aggressiveness on the forecheck. Blashill pointed that out in his postgame media session.
Yes, Kantserov had his most productive NHL game so far, but he also was strong without the puck against Pittsburgh.
Jeff Blashill on the Kantserov-Bedard-Kane line:
"Roman is very happy going to the net, so you still have a guy who will go to the net on the line. Because sometimes those kind of lines get too spread out and you don’t get any plays at the net. They did a pretty good job of…

More CHN: By removing Bedard from the injured non-roster list, the Blackhawks had to make a transaction to fit Bedard on the NHL roster. Ultimately, Nick Lardis was the player assigned back to the Rockford IceHogs, which is a justified decision, given his current situation and the team’s roster make-up.
Chicago Sun-Times: Good story from Ben Pope on Lardis reaching a developmental crossroads, as he’s somewhat at risk of becoming the next Lukas Reichel, but still has the time and skill to carve out a niche role for himself in the Blackhawks rebuild.
NHL Rumors, News, & National Hockey Now
Detroit Hockey Now: The Detroit Red Wings have serious issues still to work through early this season, but re-signing Alex DeBrincat is no longer one of them. DeBrincat has signed a seven-year contract extension carrying a $13.5 million cap hit to remain in Detroit for the long haul. That’s one boxed checked off. Still several to go for the Wings.
Daily Faceoff: One of the Red Wings’ unchecked boxes is defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who’s wanting out of Detroit after remaining unsigned as a restricted free agent. Detroit wants to re-sign Edvinsson, but it feels inevitable that he’ll get traded. Here are seven potential destinations for the former first-round pick.
Florida Hockey Now: Brady Tkachuk is finally on the board, breaking his goalless drought with a natural hat trick in the Florida Panthers 7-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. It’s Brady’s first three goals with his new team.
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers clawed back from a 2-0 deficit to scratch out a point, but still couldn’t break into the win column. It’s something for the Flyers to build on, but they’ve still got a ways to go, writes William James.
Forever Blueshirts: Don’t look now, but former No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere now leads the NHL with seven goals after another multi-goal effort in the New York Rangers‘ 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Colorado Hockey Now: No Cale Makar, no problem. The Colorado Avalanche edged out the Dallas
