NBA Insider Claims NY Knicks’ Recent Karl-Anthony Towns Contract Offer Is the Best All-Star Will Get From ANY Team

An NBA insider believes that Karl-Anthony Towns is making a mistake by not accepting the New York Knicks‘ most recent extension offer because he is unlikely to get a better one if he hits free agency next summer.

The last five months have been a joyous time for Knicks nation. In the spring, the team ended a 53-year title drought that fans have been celebrating for months. However, the mood around the team has changed since training camp for the new season opened earlier this month, and it is all about money.

New York’s $223 million roster isn’t cheap, and Towns wants a new long-term contract with only one year left on his deal after the 2026-27 season. While the six-time All-Star deserves an extension after playing a big role in their title win, there is a problem. The Knicks need him to take a team-friendly deal so they can adhere to an edict from owner James Dolan to stay under the second luxury tax apron.

A recent report claimed the team’s most recent offer before they officially ended contract talks for the time being was for four years and $200 million. Obviously, the 30-year-old passed on the proposal. However, veteran salary cap specialist Eric Pincus believes that was a bad decision.

In a new conversation with Casino.org, Pincus claimed the Knicks’ most recent offer was “a bold number for Towns to turn away, when NBA teams rarely have that kind of money to spend in free agency, especially on over-30 players.”

The veteran NBA writer added that Towns is “more valuable to New York than to most teams at that number” and that his “[representation] needs to lock in as many years as possible to extend [Towns’] career at that level,” with the center set to turn 31 years old next month.

The teams expected to have the available cap space to make Town a max offer next summer would be the Memphis Grizzlies, Brooklyn Nets, and Los Angeles Clippers. Rebuilding teams that would not be very appealing to a veteran player who wants to be on a competitive roster. The Golden State Warriors could also be a possibility if they move on from both Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. However, those are big ifs.

Towns could also opt into the final year of his contract for 2027-28, which is worth over $61 million.
