Wings sign DeBrincat to richest contract in team history

DETROIT – The Red Wings are keeping a key piece of their roster.

The Wings officially announced the signing Wednesday, October 14, of forward Alex DeBrincat to a seven-year contract extension worth $91 million ($13 million annual average value). It’s the richest contract in team history.

DeBrincat had two goals – he has a team-high four on the season – and an assist Tuesday, October 13th, as the Wings lost 5-4 in overtime to New Jersey.

"Critical is a real good word for him," said coach Todd McLellan, as to what DeBrincat means to the Wings currently. "It shows how exactly how important he is to our team and organization. We need him."

DeBrincat, 28, is coming off a 41-goal season, which led the Wings last season. He was acquired in July 2023 from Ottawa, in exchange for forward Dominik Kubalik, defenseman Donovan Sebrango (neither of which is still in Ottawa) along with a first-round draft pick.

DeBrincat, a Farmington Hills native, has a full no-trade clause the first four years of his new deal and a modified NTC the final three yeas.

Signing DeBrincat is a big checkmark off interim general manager Shawn Horcoff’s to-do list. The Wings and Simon Edvinsson have not yet been able to negotiate a new contract, and Dylan Larkin’s trade request remains intact.
