Broncos eventually have to make tough decision on Bo Nix’s future in Denver

It’s tough to get a feel for how we should look at Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. There have been times in Nix’s career when he looks above average and like a guy the Broncos can really rely on.

Unfortunately, Nix has dealt with some injuries, and his performances have taken a hit because of it. I wouldn’t say that Nix is a great player by any means, but he looks to be above average when he’s at his best and healthy.

The only question the Broncos have to answer is whether they’re willing to pay a guy like that. According to ESPN, if things don’t improve before Denver has to make a contract decision, there are some concerns about whether that will happen.

“The Broncos have more insight into the status of Nix’s ankle than we do, and it’s possible that the 26-year-old is playing through pain. Even if we take a step back and look at his full career, though, Nix is 19th in Total QBR since entering the league. He’s 22nd in yards per dropback and 29th in yards per attempt and first-down rate. And Nix has done that with one of the league’s best offensive lines and an elite architect designing the offense and calling plays,” Bill Barnwell wrote.

“The Broncos were hoping Nix would take a step forward after his great performance in the postseason and the addition of Waddle. If Nix doesn’t get there, will the Broncos want to commit to him as their quarterback of the future on a second contract?”

Nix is likely going to get paid, unless Denver believes it can replace him with someone cheaper who can produce similarly.

That certainly has many problems, since Nix already knows the offense and has won a boatload of games in Denver. However, his play has definitely raised questions, and that’s the bigger deal.
