‘It’s an Indictment Against You’ — Stephen A. Smith Rips Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer Over Reaction to Player-Only Meeting

October 17, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

The Dallas Cowboys suffered a disappointing loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5 of the 2026 NFL season. The team’s defense was seen struggling throughout the game.

The organization’s head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, has been facing criticism as he was seen praising the players for holding a players-only meeting to address their defensive struggles.

Stephen A. Smith Slams Cowboys Coach Over Meeting

In a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take”, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith shared a very different view of what a players-only meeting tells him and said

“It means the coach ain’t reaching you. So when I see a head coach, and he’s applauding the players only meeting, my attitude with him, ‘How are you okay with that?’ If you’re okay with that, you can point to players being accountable, and taking ownership, and all of those cliché kinds of things we may have heard, but ultimately it’s an indictment against you because it’s your job to reach them.”

“You ain’t playing. What the hell are you doing?” Smith added. “If they got to reach themselves, if they got to rally amongst themselves, if they’ve got to something or gumption up whatever it is necessary to right the ship that is clearly wrong, then why aren’t you the person facilitating that? If you’re not the person facilitating that, why the hell are you the coach? That’s to me is what the problem was.”

The controversy came to light when linebacker DeMarvion Overshown revealed that players had gathered without the coaching staff to discuss their performance and evaluate whether they were meeting the standards expected of the team.

The organization’s recent performance has raised questions about the team’s defensive struggles. The franchise was not able to deliver its best performance and was seen struggling throughout the game, thus showing a lack of tackling, consistency, and the ability to limit opponents’ production, despite making personnel changes intended to strengthen the unit.

It would be interesting to see whether Brian Schottenheimer will be able to address the team’s defensive struggles and help the organization get back on track. The head coach will need to find ways to improve communication, strengthen the team’s defensive strategy, and ensure that players are held accountable for their performances.

The upcoming games will be crucial for the Cowboys as they look to overcome their recent setbacks. Schottenheimer will have to prove that he can lead the team through difficult situations and help the players deliver better performances on the field.

It is good to see that the players have owned up to their mistakes and are trying to improve, but that does not mean the coaching staff can overlook the loss. Both the players and the coaching staff need to sit together and discuss the next steps to address the team’s defensive struggles.
