Hiromi Itoh Could Be Braves’ 2027 Secret Bullpen Weapon

The offseason is here, and the Atlanta Braves need fresh arms. Michael Clair of MLB.com Braves reported that the team is a “potential fit” for NPB pitcher Hiromi Itoh. This isn’t just a rumor. It comes from a scout who watched Itoh pitch in Japan. The Braves need help because Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach might not throw many innings in 2027. Alex Anthopoulos made that clear. Itoh could be the answer. He is not a flashy star like Yu Darvish, but he has the stuff to win games right now.

Itoh is small for a pitcher, but he makes up for it with skill. A scout told Clair that Itoh has an extra inch on Kaima Taira, yet he is 40 lbs lighter. That small frame changes how he might be used. The scout said, “He could be an up and down starter,” but added, “but maybe in relief he might show some more velocity.” The scout pointed to his performance in the previous WBC. Itoh came out of the bullpen then and threw 94-96 with some nasty stuff. He has a deep mix of pitches too. Yakyu Cosmopolitan noted he uses “10+ unique grips and shapes.” That variety is gold for a team in a tough series against the Dodgers.

Why Size Does Not Matter Here

Braves fans often worry about big names and big contracts. They should not worry about Itoh’s size. He won the Sawamura Award in 2025 with a 2.52 ERA. That is the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young. He did not dominate as much in 2026, but he still posted a 3.23 ERA and a 2.81 FIP across 172.2 innings. The numbers show he can handle a heavy workload. The scout believes his best comp is Yu Darvish. Darvish was not the biggest guy either, yet he became a star. From a movement standpoint, NPB boasts few better fastball specifications than Itoh, who possesses an excellent feel for spin.

The Braves need to stop looking for a savior and start looking for a weapon. Strider has had two UCL elbow surgeries. A screw is present in Schwellenbach’s elbow, which had previously been fractured. Reynaldo López battled arm discomfort for six weeks and had shoulder surgery. The rotation is fragile. Adding a pitcher who throws 94-96 in relief is smart. He does not need to start every five days. He can come in when the game is on the line. His 10+ unique grips will confuse hitters who are already tired from a long season. The Braves have the money to sign him if the price is right. They just need to see the pitch mix in person.

The Risk Is Low, The Reward Is High

Itoh is not as flashy as other Japanese aces who came to MLB. He does not throw as hard as some of them. But his movement is elite. The scout saw him show more velocity in relief. That is a key detail. If he can hit 96 mph with nasty stuff in short bursts, he will fit perfectly in a high-leverage role. The Braves lost to the Dodgers in the NL Division Series.
