DeMario ‘Pop’ Douglas Explains What Went Wrong After Admitting He Wanted the End Zone Too Badly
DeMario Douglas has given the New England Patriots plenty to feel good about over the past few weeks. His role in the passing game has grown, and Drake Maye has started finding him more often as the Patriots offense gets into a better rhythm; however, Sunday’s win over the New York Jets also gave the receiver a moment he would rather forget.
Douglas knows how quickly one mistake can change a game. The Patriots escaped with a 26-19 victory; however, the fumble left him frustrated with himself. Now, with the Patriots dealing with more injuries at receiver, he has another chance to make an impact, provided he learns from what went wrong.

On October 21, speaking to WEEI after the Patriots’ win, Douglas explained that his eagerness to reach the end zone played a part in the mistake. He admitted he tried to do too much instead of protecting the football, a decision that could have cost New England dearly.

It was an honest assessment from Douglas, who had already expressed his frustration after the game. Those numbers showed what he can bring when the Patriots get the ball into his hands in space.
The timing could hardly be more important for the Patriots. Romeo Doubs has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury against the Jets, while Mack Hollins is also sidelined. That leaves the veteran with a chance to handle more of the work from the slot. The turnover gave the Jets a window to compete, but the Patriots managed to win despite the mistake. Regardless of the outcome of the game, the wide receiver seems to be aware of the mistake and understands that it does not absolve him of making a mistake.
This is even more important now because Douglas has taken an increasingly large role in the Patriots’ offensive game plan over the last several weeks. In the games against the Las Vegas Raiders and the Jets, the receiver accumulated 11 receptions for 151 yards and three touchdowns, giving Maye another target downfield.
In the game against the Jets, the receiver had seven receptions from eight targets for 86 yards and a touchdown. With Maye playing better over the last three games and throwing just one interception during that stretch, the passing game has started to look more settled. Douglas has been part of that improvement, using his quickness to get open and give his quarterback an option when plays break down.
The fumble was a setback; however, it does not wipe out the progress he has made. Douglas has shown he can produce when given opportunities. Now, the challenge is to keep that aggressive mindset without letting the desire for a bigger play lead to another costly mistake.
