Panthers Linked to Aggressive $12 Million Trade to Bolster Defense

October 21, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

The Carolina Panthers have gotten off to a solid start to begin the 2026 NFL season. Through Week 6 action, Dave Canales and company hold a 3-2 record and currently sit atop the NFC South division race.

Last season, the team was one of the bigger surprises in the league. They were able to win the NFC South division title and make the playoffs. That led to increased expectations this year.

So far, the Panthers have done a good job of living up to the expectations. Are they a Super Bowl contender? Maybe not, but they’re definitely a team that should make the postseason once again.

With that being said, there are some areas that could use improvement. One of those areas comes in the secondary. Carolina could use more help at the cornerback position.

Keeping that in mind, an intriguing target has been suggested for the Panthers to consider leading up to the NFL trade deadline on November 10.

Carolina Panthers Linked to Intriguing Cornerback Trade

Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame has taken a look at 15 players who could be dealt before the deadline. He believes that Carolina could be a player for Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen, who signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the team in free agency.

Verderame listed both the Panthers and Buffalo Bills as potential trade destinations for Woolen.

“Woolen won the Super Bowl in February with the Seahawks, and could now find himself on his third different team within an eight-month span,” Verderame wrote. “After signing a one-year, $12 million deal this offseason, Woolen could be a prized asset come the deadline. Posting 12 interceptions with Seattle, the 27-year-old doesn’t have an interception for Philadelphia, but has still played well, as evidenced by a 66.9 PFF grade, ranking 30th among all corners.”

This season with the Eagles, the 27-year-old cornerback has played in six games. He has racked up 24 total tackles to go along with a forced fumble and four defended passes.

Throughout his 70-game NFL career across five years, Woolen has totaled 227 tackles, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and 57 defended passes.

Making a move for a talent like Woolen would certainly help Carolina’s standing among playoff contenders. No concrete reporting has connected the Panthers to a trade with Philadelphia, but it’s an intriguing idea that would make a lot of sense for the team.
