Man Utd face record compensation fee as Fabian Hurzeler contract detail emerges
Manchester United could be forced to pay a world-record compensation fee if they attempt to appoint Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler as a replacement for Michael Carrick.
According to The Telegraph, Hurzeler’s contract at the Amex Stadium does not contain a release clause, leaving Brighton in a strong position to resist approaches for their highly rated head coach.
The 33-year-old signed a new agreement in May, extending his commitment to the Seagulls until June 2029.
Brighton are reportedly relaxed about his future despite growing admiration from United, who have identified the German as a potential managerial target.
Hurzeler has primarily been considered a long-term option, although United could accelerate their interest if Carrick is dismissed following the club’s disappointing start to the season.
The Red Devils have won just two of their opening 11 matches across all competitions, with Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como increasing scrutiny of Carrick’s position.
However, appointing Hurzeler would represent a complicated and potentially expensive operation.
Chelsea paid Brighton approximately £21.5 million to recruit Graham Potter in 2022, while Bayern Munich reportedly spent £21.7m to appoint Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig.
Both deals remain among the most expensive managerial appointments in football history, but Brighton would reportedly demand an even greater sum for Hurzeler.
The south-coast club believe the German has the potential to develop into one of Europe’s leading coaches and are determined to retain his services.
Their confidence has been strengthened by an impressive opening to the Premier League campaign, with Brighton sitting third behind Manchester City and Arsenal.
Hurzeler’s team have also recorded notable victories over Arsenal and Aston Villa, reinforcing their ambitions of securing Champions League qualification.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom is understood to have been optimistic about the club’s prospects even before the campaign began, with internal projections suggesting a possible top-three finish.
Hurzeler’s position was previously tested during a difficult sequence of 13 league matches that produced just one victory.
However, Brighton maintained their confidence in him and subsequently rewarded his progress with a new contract.
It also remains uncertain whether Hurzeler would welcome an approach from United, given the instability surrounding the Old Trafford club.
For now, Carrick remains in charge, with Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth potentially significant for his immediate future.
