Payton Pritchard’s New Deal Will Be a Bargain by Next Year

October 22, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

NBA insider Shams Charania recently announced that Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard signed a new two-year, $44.2 million contract extension. It includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season.

After a career year in 2026, the Celtics rewarded their 2020 draft pick with two more years to his current contract. This move shows how much the organization trusts Pritchard as a building block, not just now, but for the foreseeable future, as the franchise chases its 19th NBA championship.

Pritchard Has Outplayed Every Contract He’s Signed

When Pritchard inked his current four-year, $30 million deal in the fall of 2023, his NBA future was somewhat in jeopardy. Between a mediocre year three and a stacked guard room, there was a chance Pritchard was just another talented small guard who never got a real opportunity.

That would all change with the losses of Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogdon. Pritchard became a go-to guy off the bench for Boston, far outperforming his $7.5 million average annual value. He improved steadily over the next three seasons, as shown below.

  • 2022-23: 5.6 points, 1.3 assists, 75% FT in 13.4 minutes
  • 2023-24: 9.6 points, 3.4 assists, 82.1% FT in 22.3 minutes
  • 2024-25: 14.3 points, 3.5 assists, 84.5% FT in 28.4 minutes
  • 2025-26: 17.0 points, 5.2 assists, 89% FT in 32.4 minutes

This increase in production wouldn’t go unnoticed either, with Pritchard helping the Celtics win an NBA championship in 2024, then winning the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2025, and now earning this new extension in 2026.

Well, he might just take another leap.

Pritchard scored 17 points in 28 minutes off the bench in Boston’s season opener against the Detroit Pistons. Looking ahead to the rest of the 2026-2027 season, Pritchard could become the full-time starter for a Celtics team where he may be tasked with being as high as the number-two option behind Jayson Tatum on offense. In that role, a 20-point scoring average isn’t out of the question.

That potential production would likely make his new deal look like a bargain if he maintains it over several years.

The Mutual Option Protects Both Sides

Mutual options have increased in popularity this past offseason, with Pritchard’s extension being the latest example.

A mutual option requires both sides to agree to trigger it, giving each party a checkpoint before committing further. For Boston, it’s a safeguard. If Pritchard declines at 31, an age when small guards often start to slow down, the team isn’t locked in. For Pritchard, it’s a guaranteed floor with the flexibility to hit free agency and chase a bigger deal if he outplays the contract.

If Pritchard keeps producing at this level, both sides will happily opt in. If not, either can walk away clean.

Another way to look at this is by percentage of the cap. Pritchard’s new deal projects to be:

28-29: 11.5% of the cap
29-30: 11.8% of the cap

Pritchard’s current deal comes in at 4.7% of the cap. https://t.co/QaJFfTdBsb

At Less Than 12% of the Cap, This Could Be Another Steal

Celtics fans will have to wait and see, but given the direction Payton Pritchard’s development is trending and his new deal taking up less than 12% of the team’s cap space per year, he could make this look like a steal once again.

For the Celtics to continue to contend in the East, they’ll be counting on Pritchard to live up to the expectations that come with a new contract, and if his trajectory holds, Boston got another bargain.
