The New York Knicks shattered viewership history after facing the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. But endured a strange ring ceremony beforehand. Even owner James Dolan took the ring ceremony to another level.

For starters, Knicks insider for The Athletic Joe Vardon revealed Thursday that some Knicks assistants never received their ring. But Dolan also sent out a phishing email to employees hoping for a ring. All in the name of easing cybersecurity concerns.

“Atop the email, a copy of which The Athletic has obtained, was a graphic of two differently styled rings,” Vardon wrote. “But the email was a fake-out, a phishing test Madison Square Garden sent to see if those employees would click, multiple team sources said.”

Furthermore, Vardon added: “Those who did click the link at the bottom of the message did not get to choose any jewelry. Instead, they were forced to attend a mandatory cybersecurity class to help satisfy some of Dolan’s growing cybersecurity concerns, those team sources said.”

So this rises as one of the more convoluted ring ceremonies in NBA history. And it became a prelude to the 76ers stunning NYK on its home floor.

However, Vardon mentioned that members of the Oklahoma City Thunder staff never received their rings immediately. Still, Knick players like Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony-Towns, Jose Alvarado all the way to coach Mike Brown received their bling. Which even presented a Madison Square Garden feel.

New York had Wednesday and Thursday off. The defending NBA champs hit the road for the first time this season on Friday. By taking on the Boston Celtics in an Eastern Conference showdown.
