Deion Sanders’ Stubborn Recruiting Style Called ‘A Bad Look’ Amid Colorado’s Slide
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes are having a difficult period at the moment. They currently have a 2–4 overall record and are winless with a 0–3 record in Big 12 conference play. Having lost four games in a row, the team seems really hopeless.
The results have brought much scrutiny into Sanders, with many criticizing his coaching style. One analyst has also questioned his recruiting stance, and gave him a key piece of advice.
Analyst questions Deion Sanders’ recruiting stance
The team’s relentless offseason reliance on the transfer portal has failed to yield on-field chemistry so far. The offense is averaging a meager 19.5 points per game and the team also ranks near the bottom of the nation (136th) in penalty yards.

FOX Sports analyst RJ Young has also questioned Sanders’ long-standing refusal to conduct in-home or off-campus recruiting visits. He noted that elite coaches such as Kirby Smart have routinely visited prospects’ homes, while Sanders has not. He said, “When you seem to be losing players because Kirby Smart is willing to walk into somebody’s house and you are not, Nick Saban is willing to walk into somebody’s house, you are not. Back when you were still doing that, quite literally every other major college football coach in the country is willing to come into someone else’s house and say hi, have a meal, and have a really good private conversation. That’s a bad look.”
He added that Sanders reasoning for the stance is also wrong, “Now Prime’s reasoning is ‘I don’t think many people want me in their houses,’ ‘I don’t think that they want to be apologizing for how their house looks or having to have these discussions about what he must be used to’ and I said that’s exactly what they want.”
Sanders has previously explained why he refuses to conduct home visits.
Deion Sanders explains recruiting stance
Sanders has consistently defended the policy since taking over at Colorado in December 2022. University records obtained by USA TODAY confirmed he has made zero off-campus recruiting contacts, including no home visits, despite a contractual private-travel budget that went unused.
In a 2024 press conference, Sanders explained his decision. He said, “I’m a businessman as well, so I try to save our university money every darn chance I get.” He added, “Going there is just showcasing for me. That’s just blowing money. It’s blowing a bag, don’t make sense. I can’t do things other coaches can do. You know why? I’m Coach Prime. And I didn’t stutter when I said it.”
Deion Sanders will now focus on his team’s next game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
