It’s clear to Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels that his shooting needs major improvement, which is why he spent much of the offseason trying to fix it. However, his big strength remains his defense, and he put that on full display in the Hawks’ 128-81 demolition of the Charlotte Hornets.
“The Great Barrier Thief” absolutely tormented the Hornets as he helped himself to seven steals in the game. NBA on ESPN posted a video montage on X, formerly Twitter, highlighting Daniels’ many takeaways.

Daniels picked Hornets rookie Christian Anderson’s pocket in the backcourt and intercepted a number of passes to get his seven steals. But while he had good anticipation and awareness, some of the passes the Hornets threw were not very good. The Hornets, who were now without LaMelo Ball, seemed to be missing a steady ballhandler and playmaker to help set up the offense.
Aside from his seven steals, Daniels also added 11 points, nine rebounds, and four assists to help the Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season. The two-time NBA All-Defense Team selection is having a strong start to the season with 12 steals over his first two games. However, he has yet to hit a 3-pointer despite working on his shot for much of the offseason.
Jalen Johnson and Aaron Wiggins each had 19 points to lead the way for Atlanta, who dealt the Hornets with their heaviest blowout defeat in franchise history. The Hawks will be hoping to extend their perfect start to 3-0 when they host the Houston Rockets in their home opener on Saturday.
