The New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs cemented themselves as the top teams in the NBA last season but their 2026/27 campaigns have not got off to a great start.

The Knicks won their first championship in 53 years by beating the Spurs in the Finals but they have now failed to win their opening two games this term.

They lost to the Philadelphia 76ers on opening night before suffering a 107-103 defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics on Friday.

As for the Spurs, they have just lost to the Houston Rockets (114-110) after an opening game defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder (116-104).

Now, ESPN have shared that on the back of the two aforementioned teams’ latest losses, they have matched an unfortunate record.

They confirmed via X: “The Spurs and Knicks have both lost their first two games of the season. This is only the third time in NBA history that the reigning conference champions both started 0-2 (1979-80 and 1969-70).”

It is still way too early in the season to have any major concerns but both teams will no doubt want to get a win on the board as soon as possible.

The Spurs are now scheduled to play the 1-1 Dallas Mavericks on Saturday evening, while the Knicks host the Orlando Magic on Sunday.
