Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer has drawn the ire of Stephen A. Smith this week after his recent comments calling himself a great coach.
The Cowboys are 2-4 this season and criticism is starting to mount.
But when asked about the outside noise, Schottenheimer suggested he blocks most of it out before adding ‘I know what a great coach I am’.
As per CBS News, he said: “No one likes it. I block out most of it; some of it gets to me, but at the same time, I’ve got strong shoulders. I know what a great coach I am, and I know what this team is capable of. That’s what I focus on.”
But it’s fair to say that comment has not gone down well with Smith, who launched into a rant on ESPN’s First Take this week, which left his fellow presenters trying their best to hold back their laughter.
He said: “This is the problem. Let me ask Brian Schottenheimer a rhetorical question. If your quarterback completed 41 percent of his passes, would you call him great?
“If you defence gave up 41 points a game, would you call them great?
“If you were not the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and somebody else was coaching them and in the two years they were coaching, one year they didn’t make the playoffs and another year they’re underachieving, two games under 500 with the most potent offence, arguably, in the sport. One, that your own quarterback, $60 million quarterback, by the way, called GOTI, you understand what I’m saying.
“This is what he said, and then you turn around and you spend the next two weeks looking for the d*** offence, after telling everybody what an explosive offence it was. Is that great?
“If your kids came home and got 41 on their test scores, would you call it great? If you had a D or an F, would you call it great? I mean, come on. If your car could only go 40 miles an hour, would you call it great?”
The Cowboys are now due to return to action against the 2-4 Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.
