It seems you can forget about Peyton Manning being the Colts’ GM

The Indianapolis Colts are in need of a new general manager after owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired Chris Ballard last Monday. Unless something changes, you can forget about franchise legend Peyton Manning filling the role.

Despite a report from longtime broadcaster Dan Patrick saying the Colts either had or would reach out to Manning about the vacancy, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that was not the case.

Time not ‘right’ for Peyton

Additionally, Schefter said that even if Indianapolis approached the two-time Super Bowl champion, Manning has no interest in becoming a GM.

“The Colts have not approached Manning about their vacant GM job nor would the Hall of Fame quarterback be expected to be interested in the position,” Schefter wrote. “Manning has not trained or aspired to become an NFL general manager, not with all that he has going on in his life.”

Schefter cited Manning’s family and media commitments, including his weekly “ManningCast” during Monday Night Football, as reasons why he wouldn’t be a fit.

“The timing to become an NFL general manager, which requires day-to-day attention, would not be right,” he added.

Nothing new for Manning

This isn’t the first time Manning’s name has been mentioned for an executive or ownership position. Beloved in Indianapolis and Denver, the two cities where he carved out his Hall of Fame playing career, Manning told The Denver Post in 2024 that working in a front office or owning part of a team wasn’t something “that’s anywhere on my radar by any means.”

Of course, feelings and situations can change over the years. But right now, Manning has his media company, Omaha Productions, humming, and he’s still a constant presence on television, whether it’s with “ManningCast” or in commercials.

Don’t expect to see him in an owner’s suite on game day or running an NFL Draft war room anytime soon.
