Entering the 2026-27 NBA season, it’s clear the Los Angeles Lakers are now Luka Doncic’s team. Everyone knew Coach JJ Redick’s offense would be a bit more heliocentric, but it reached historic heights in their clash with the Utah Jazz. Doncic went ballistic, scoring 50 points and equaling records held by Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, LeBron James, and Elgin Baylor.
All the historic NBA records Lakers’ Doncic broke vs. Jazz
It seems like everyone in the NBA can score 50 points in a regular-season game. Tony Delk, Malachi Flynn, and Corey Brewer did it throughout their careers. However, when a star does it to prove something, like the start of a new era, it feels different. They start to shatter insane records. That is exactly what Luka Doncic did against the Jazz. His 50-point outburst was something else and a marvel to watch. This put him in the conversation with greats like LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor. He also surpassed Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo in all-time 50-point rankings.

Lakers’ Doncic ties Abdul-Jabbar in all-time NBA records
Saying Doncic went unconscious in scoring is an understatement. He shot 56.7% from the field on 30 shots, 44.4% from three on 18 shots, and 90.1% from the free-throw line on 11 attempts. This got him 52 points.
This outburst against the Jazz marked Doncic’s 10th career 50-point game. It ties him with Abdul-Jabbar for the 11th-most 50-point games in NBA history.
Who are the players in front of Doncic and Abdul-Jabbar? Wilt Chamberlain leads all NBA players all-time with his 118 50-point games. Michael Jordan follows as a distant second with 31 50-point games. Kobe Bryant and James Harden are then third with 25 50-point outings each. The full list goes as follows, via Basketball Reference.

At just 27, Doncic surpassing Durant and Antetokounmpo is already a huge feat. Adding that he matched Abdul-Jabbar and is just one more 50-point game from tying Allen Iverson means great things are ahead for him.
Lakers’ Doncic surpasses O’Neal and equals James
Doncic rose not just on the all-time NBA leaderboards. This 52-point barrage against the Jazz was his third time to pop off to that degree in a Lakers uniform. This now ranks him fifth on the Lakers’ all-time 50-point game list.
Doncic has surpassed O’Neal and Chamberlain with his feat. More than that, he also equals James, who also had three 50-point games during his run with the Lakers. At the top of this Lakers all-time list is none other than Bryant, via StatMuse.

With 79 games left in the 2026-27 NBA regular season, Doncic will likely surpass Mikan and West in the all-time Lakers 50-point rankings. He only needs three more games like this, and it seems Coach Redick will lean on that heliocentrism to win games anyway.
Lakers’ Doncic joins West and Baylor in elite company
Scoring wasn’t the only thing Doncic thrived at in this game against the Jazz. He delivered an all-around performance no scheme could stop. Alongside his 52 points, he grabbed eight rebounds and snagged two steals.
Offensively, Coach JJ Redick and the Lakers relied on him to run the offense. Luka Doncic then dropped 10 assists to keep the momentum going. This helped involve the whole Lakers roster. Six Lakers scored nine or more points to help them win 132-123 over the Jazz.
This insane double-double put him in elite company. Doncic joins Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as the only three players in franchise history to have gotten 50 points while also getting 10 assists in a game, per ESPN Insights. Only Baylor has done it twice, but Doncic could tie or even break that record by the end of the season.
Coach Redick, Lakers reach new scoring heights with Doncic’s 52-point game
Usually, scoring 50 points in an NBA game is taken as a purely individual accolade. This massive outburst by Luka Doncic wasn’t just for him or for setting larger-than-life NBA records. He helped the Lakers reach a new height despite the franchise having existed for nearly 80 years.
This is the first time the Lakers have scored 125 points in their first three games of the NBA regular season.
Doncic wasn’t the only player Coach Redick trusted to pull off this feat. Austin Reaves scored 29 points of his own, followed by Collin Sexton with 13. Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle also scored 11 points. Sandro Mamukelashvili scored nine points. Quentin Grimes notched three points, while Walker Kessler and Kevon Looney each got two.
Jake LaRavia was the only Lakers player who played but could not score. He still contributed four rebounds, two steals, a block, and an assist.
A new era for the Lakers has dawned on the NBA. This game against the Jazz is only the beginning. It will be a delight to see Doncic and Coach Redick at their peak as the season goes on.
