The Philadelphia Eagles have faced plenty of questions over the past few weeks about their handling of quarterback Jalen Hurts’ blood clots. And while the NFL has already cleared the team’s medical decisions, it reportedly isn’t happy with how the Eagles have handled everything since.
According to a new report, the league is “furious” with the Eagles over their public messaging about Hurts’ condition. The issue isn’t how the team treated its quarterback, but how little it has explained to the public, even as the diagnosis grew more serious.
Hurts’ Blood Clot Saga
The whole medical situation began when Hurts was cleated in the calf during an Oct. 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Days later, specialists reportedly found a blood clot on an MRI, just one day before the Eagles played the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, where Hurts played the entire game in a 19-17 loss. That’s when the reports started to emerge.
“Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk,” reported ESPN’s Ian Rapoport, though Hurts’ agent later said he did get some sleep.
A follow-up ultrasound after the team returned showed that the clot had moved.
The Eagles initially described the issue as a superficial clot, saying in a statement that doctors had advised that “activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play,” according to CBS Sports. But a few days later, the team announced that the diagnosis had changed to a deep vein thrombosis with bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning clots in both lungs.
Hurts was then placed on injured reserve and is widely expected to miss the rest of the season, though the Eagles have not confirmed a timetable for his return. The news led to widespread backlash against the Eagles from those around the sports world who questioned the original diagnosis.
The NFL reportedly concluded that the Eagles’ process “was handled appropriately” and that the team would not be punished. But the NFL Players Association wasn’t ready to move on, saying, “Before conclusions are drawn about how this situation was handled, there must be a full investigation into what occurred.”
On Sunday, the league and the NFLPA announced that they are working together to review the situation.
‘Furious’
While the league might have determined that Hurts’ injury was “handled appropriately” from a medical standpoint, that doesn’t mean that the Eagles did everything right.
According to Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer, a longtime source with connections to the league office said the NFL is “furious” with how the Eagles have handled the messaging surrounding this issue.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained, the league “has no issue with the manner in which the Eagles handled the health of quarterback Jalen Hurts.”
“In contrast, the league is not thrilled with the manner in which the team handled the ensuing controversy,” Florio wrote.
So far, head coach Nick Sirianni is the only member of the organization who has addressed the situation publicly, and he hasn’t said much. General manager Howie Roseman has not spoken about it at all, and the doctors who evaluated Hurts haven’t been made available for public comment.
While the Eagles have cited patient privacy multiple times, the team’s own statements have already shared specific details about Hurts’ diagnosis.
Needless to say, the whole situation has been a mess, and the league does not seem too happy about it.
