Tennessee softball legend Monica Abbott to serve as Homecoming grand marshal

October 26, 2026 · by SPW Pipeline

Tennessee is bringing one of its greatest athletes of all time for Homecoming this year.

Tennessee softball legend Monica Abbott will return to Knoxville to serve as grand marshal for the 2026 Homecoming parade, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Nov. 6 in front of Fraternity Park. The parade route will go down Volunteer Boulevard past Circle Park and turn onto Peyton Manning Pass to end in front of Neyland Stadium.

No. 17 Tennessee football (6-2, 3-2 SEC) hosts No. 8 Kentucky (7-1, 5-1) at Neyland Stadium on Nov. 7 (6-8 p.m., TBA) for the Homecoming game.

Abbott is one of the most accomplished players in the history of the game, from college to the pros to the Olympics. The 6-foot-3 pitcher threw an astounding 23 no-hitters with six perfect games during her career at Tennessee from 2004-07. Her No. 7 jersey was retired at Tennessee in 2013.

Abbott led the Lady Vols to three consecutive Women’s College World Series from 2005-07, including a runner-up finish in 2007. She left Tennessee with a 189-34 record, a 0.79 ERA, 112 shutouts, 2,440 strikeouts and 125 games with 10 or more strikeouts.

The lefty became the first pitcher in NCAA Division I history to record at least 500 strikeouts in four different seasons. Her career-best was 724 strikeouts in 358⅓ innings pitched as a senior.

Abbott has competed in the Olympics twice for the U.S. national team, winning silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

She made history in 2016 when she signed a six-year contract worth $1 million with Scarp Yard Dawgs in the now-defunct National Pro Fastpitch league. It was the first million-dollar contract in the league’s history.

The flamethrower held a Guinness World Record for 13 years for the fastest softball pitch ever recorded when she threw 77 mph during a NPF game in 2012. Then former Tennessee star Karlyn Pickens broke Abbott’s record in 2025 with a 78.2 mph pitch, a record Pickens broke again the same season when she threw 79.4 mph.
